Welcome one and all to Hudson Valley Shiso Farm's very first Mixology Monday (or #MixologyMonday) cocktail post. With the weather starting to get colder, we thought we'd kick this off with our "Shiso Hot Toddy" recipe.
A "hot toddy," also sometimes referred to as a "hot whiskey," is a hot mixed drink typically made from whiskey, water, honey/sugar, tea, and spices. In addition to being delicious -- especially on a cold day -- hot toddies are thought to be good for colds since they can relieve cold/flu symptoms.
Our hot toddy differs from most in that for the body of our cocktail, we use hot apple cider instead of water, tea, and honey. This change gives the cocktail a distinct autumn feel. Shiso hot toddies are our drink of choice on a cold day and we hope it will be yours too!
- 1.5 oz Bourbon (we used Jack Daniels)
- 4 oz Apple Cider
- Hefty Squeeze of orange juice
- 1.5 oz red OR green HVSF shiso syrup
- orange slice for garnish
Heat 4 oz of Apple Cider in a heat safe mug. Add bourbon, orange juice, and shiso syrup. Mix well. You can either drink straight from your mug or carefully transfer the cocktail to your glass of choice. Serve with orange slice as a garnish and enjoy!
